Mission San Juan Capistrano

26801 Old Mission Rod, San Juan, Capistrano, California 92675

If you want to find out more about the rich history surrounding Orange County, head on over to Mission San Juan Capistrano for a family day trip. This area is considered the birthplace of the OC. It was founded over 200 years ago by Spanish Missionaries. These days, you can still explore the building while finding out about the different cultures, including that of the Indigenous Americans who called this area home. The mission still rings the bells throughout the year, and you can check the schedule to see if you might hear them!

Tanaka Farms

5380 ¾ University Drive, Irvine, California 92612

If it’s time to break out and touch some grass, you should consider a journey over to Tanaka Farms. This family-owned farm spans generations and continues to offer some of the freshest produce in the area. They offer u-pick produce, including pumpkins, strawberries, blackberries, melons, and sunflowers. They also have regular events such as Storytime at the Barnyard and cooking demonstrations. While you are there, you can take a tour of the farms from the back of a wagon and find out all about this historic destination!

Balboa Island

Balboa Island, Newport Beach, California

The Balboa Island combines breathtaking views with endless activities for the perfect family day trip in Orange County! They have regular planned events, including whale watching and ferry rides. If you are the type of person who prefers to play things by ear, you are going to love this destination! Take a stroll down Balboa Avenue, stop in for a coffee, try a frozen banana just like the ones in Arrested Development, and watch the fish splash around. They also have some fabulous restaurants, meticulously landscaped gardens, and bike rentals.

Sherman Library and Gardens

2637 East Coast Highway, Corona del Mar, California 92625

Sherman Library and Gardens is one of the best Orange County places to go for the day with the family when you are looking for some breathtaking views. The gardens are full of different plant species, including over 100 palms and 130 begonias. The lands have been thoughtfully landscaped with vibrant colors visible everywhere you turn. You can walk past the artistic succulent garden, take a look at the koi pond, or spend some time in the tea garden. They have classes and summer camps for kids, as well as an art collection featuring landscape paintings from artists in Southern California.

San Clemente Pier

San Clemente Pier, California 92672

The San Clemente Pier is a kid-friendly destination where you can spend your entire day. This area allows fishing on the pier with a valid license. If you prefer to surf, grab your board for their 3-4 foot waves. While I could spend hours at the beach, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. You can stop by Casa Romantica and get bluff-side views. Or you can head down the 2.3-mile trail surrounded by lush trees and hedges. There are plenty of restaurants where you can stop and get some refreshments before heading back out for more fun.
